Dallas has no shortage of high-end steakhouses, so the team behind Nuri had to find inventive ways to make this new venture stand out in a saturated market. Their USP? Offer an elevated twist on the classic concept through Korean flavors and cooking techniques, and infuse the restaurant with a palette and textures inspired by Korean celadon ceramics as an homage to the heritage of CEO and sole-investor, Wan Kim, of Smoothie King fame.

In one area, red stone with veining that resembles marbled cuts of meat forms a fireplace and a bar counter, while another features walnut wall paneling, geometric black-and-white stone floors. Blue-gray velvet upholstery covers the rounded backs of customized curved banquettes, which are set into niches formed by walnut millwork and stepped gray marble counters.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the Nuri Dining Chair. Developed specifically for this project in close collaboration with AvroKO, the design comprises a velvet-covered backrest that’s lifted slightly off the wooden frame on brass finials, and a tone-matched leather seat cushion for added comfort. The result was such a success that it also features in AvroKO’s newly opened NYC gallery, Host on Howard. At Nuri, both the banquettes and the chairs soften the interior’s bold geometry and introduce a cool touch to the otherwise rich palette.

Distinctive lighting also identifies the main dining space. Globe-shaped pendants are suspended from central pillars on thin arching metal arms, overlooking custom oval-shaped tables like futuristic robot heads. Meanwhile, large illuminated elements with fluted glass and gold-mirrored details provide an elegant old-world counterpoint. There’s even a lampshade fashioned from the backplate of a tanker truck in the bar area.

In another separate space, the pale-green hues of the traditional celadon ceramics appear across a series of tiered, cylindrical ceramic pendant lights and the reeded front of the bar counter. There’s also a private dining room, which can accommodate large parties, where the wall coverings depict birds in flight against a gold-leaf sky, while the carpet is patterned with watery blue-green hues. Brightliner Sloane Dining Chairs with cushioned backrests strapped to their walnut frames are shaped to gently embrace the sitter. Each of these distinct yet visually cohesive spaces presents an experience for guests that’s a cut above the rest.
Interior design firm AvroKO—a frequent Stellar Works collaborator—brought deep, rich hues into the spacious dining areas to create a sense of intimacy. The dark materials, lustrous metals, and strategic placement of grand architectural elements like columns and seating frameworks all help to reduce the scale of the spaces.
